Story of Tenkyoji Temple

Tenkyoji Temple is a historic temple that was established in the 9th century. Overcoming the crises of warfare and destruction by fire, it flourished through multiple restorations and reconstructions.

During the Edo period, it received protection from the shogunate, attracting scholars and cultural figures who actively engaged in the study of Buddhist teachings and academic pursuits.

In the Meiji era, there were temporary threats to its existence, but thanks to the efforts of many believers and local people, it has been passed down to the present day.

Even today, it boasts beautiful gardens and a magnificent main hall, continuing to captivate believers and tourists alike. Alongside faith, it plays an important role in the development of art and culture, actively engaging in welfare activities and environmental conservation.

Tenkyoji Temple’s history, while overcoming difficulties, continues to cherish the inheritance of faith and culture, shining in contemporary society.
